Neurofeedback & the
First Responder Community
The Impact of Stress on First Responders
First Responders face a daily onslaught of high-stress situations, physical danger, long and unpredictable hours, and the emotional toll of witnessing human suffering. This constant exposure to trauma can lead to a range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, burnout, substance abuse, and suicide / suicidal ideation. Neurofeedback can be an excellent resource for providing first responders respite from work-related stressors.
As an example of issues faced by First Responders, a 2019 Fraternal Order of Police survey of 8,000 police officers across the U.S. found the following:
78% of respondents said they had experienced critical stress on the job.
68% said the job’s stress has left them with unresolved emotional issues.
16% have had thoughts of suicide,
15% have struggled with substance abuse,
52% have experienced family and relationship problems.
61% are haunted by recurring or unwanted memories of incidents.
First Responders' families are vital to their well-being. However, due to the demanding and stressful nature of First Responder jobs, family members also face unique challenges. These challenges include emotional and psychological strain, financial difficulties, social isolation, and concerns about their loved ones' safety.
There is a clear need for support services tailored to address the specific needs of First Responder families, helping them cope with these challenges and maintain healthy relationships.
